# Rate limits and usage

> Request budgets per key and per organization, and how to see what you used.

## Limits

| Budget | Limit |
| - | - |
| Requests per key | 120 per minute |
| Requests per organization (all keys together) | 1,200 per minute |
| Requests per organization | 10,000 per UTC day |
| Page size | 100 items |

`GET /limits` returns the limits that apply to your key right now. Read it instead of hard-coding the numbers above.

When a budget runs out, the API returns `429 rate_limited` with a `Retry-After` header. Wait that many seconds before trying again.

## Staying under the limits

* **Use the change feed** instead of re-listing all calls. One request to `GET /calls/changes` tells you exactly what is new.
* **Ask for 100 per page.** Fewer, larger pages use less of your budget.

## Seeing your usage

| Endpoint | Shows |
| - | - |
| `GET /usage` | Organization request totals over a window |
| `GET /keys/{key_id}/usage` | One key's request totals |
| `GET /audit-events` | Key changes and API requests, oldest first |

Both usage endpoints need `usage:read`. The audit feed needs `audit:read`.
